There are cities in Ukraine whose very names now sound like prayers.
Izium - once a gem of the Donetsk region, embraced by pine forests, refreshed by the river’s breeze, beloved for its peace and beauty - stands today as a symbol of deep human suffering. What was once picturesque is now wounded. What was once full of life is now scarred by shelling. A city that used to breathe with nature now gasps under the weight of destruction.
Every explosion, every broken window, every shattered wall in Izium whispers the same tragic truth: “This is the reality of Ukraine.”
Yet, even in that darkness, something extraordinary is happening. Where There Is Pain, the Church Walks First
While the world often sees only the ruins, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA sees the people - their tears, their fear, their exhaustion, their faith. When the night shakes with explosions, and when dawn reveals destruction, the Church awakens not to despair, but to mission. Because the Church is called to be exactly where it hurts the most.
And so they go: to Izium, to Mykolaivka, to the villages and towns of Donetsk region - wherever human suffering has carved its deepest wounds.
Through the ministry of His Eminence Metropolitan Serhii of Donetsk and the dean of Donetsk Deanery of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, Very Rev. Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov, his wife Natalia and son Dmytro, the UOC of the USA comes not as a visitor, but as brothers and sisters. The Church carries bags filled with food, medicine, hygiene supplies, blankets, and heaters - but most importantly, they carry presence, prayer, and hope.
They meet mothers with children who fled in the night. They meet the elderly whose homes no longer exist. They meet those whose bodies are injured and whose spirits tremble. And with every encounter, the Church whispers through action: “You are not forgotten. You are not alone. We are with you. God is with you.”
When Strength Fades, God Renews It! The humanitarian team serving in the Donetsk region does not hide the truth: the fatigue is real, the burnout is real, the emotional weight is overwhelming. They are ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
But as Fr. Kostiantyn says, “The Lord has His plan for us. He lifts us, strengthens us, and sends us again where we are needed.”
It is this obedience to Christ’s command to love - this readiness to return again and again to the broken places - that transforms human charity into holy ministry. And behind this ministry stand the hierarchs of the UOC of the USA.
Under the archpastoral care of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, and the direct, tireless involvement of His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, the humanitarian arm of the Church has become a lifeline to thousands.
Metropolitan Antony, with the wisdom of a spiritual father, constantly reminds the flock that: “Where a human life is threatened, the Church must be present. Where a tear falls, the Church must kneel beside it. Where fear grows, the Church must proclaim hope.”
And indeed, through his leadership and the generosity of the faithful in America, countless lives have been touched.
From the road between ruined cities, amid the smoke and cold, Fr. Kostiantyn speaks words that echo the Gospel: “We are again where hundreds of eyes are full of tears, where countless stories and losses live. We are here - beside those who wait not only for bread, but for a warm, gentle word, for prayer, for support.”
These displaced people once lived normal, peaceful lives: homes, cars, gardens, businesses, dreams. Now they carry only memories and the hope that tomorrow will be different. Yet their spirit remains unbroken.
“They fear us,” Fr. Kostiantyn says. “They fear our spirit, our endurance, our language. Because we cannot be erased.”
This is the miracle of Ukraine. Even in the face of cruelty, even under the shadow of invasion, the Ukrainian soul burns with dignity, courage, and unshakable faith.
And the Church walks with that soul, step by step. In a time when light, heat, water, and even a gentle word have become luxuries, every act of kindness shines like a candle. Every meal delivered, every medication given, every prayer spoken is a declaration: Evil will not win. Life continues. Hope breathes. God walks among His people.
In moments of war, suffering, and uncertainty, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA continues to shine as a living witness of Christ’s love - through quiet acts of mercy, through hands that give, and through hearts that refuse to turn away. Reflecting on the faith and sacrifice of the clergy and faithful of the UOC of the USA, Archbishop Daniel offered these deeply moving words:
“In times when the world feels shaken, and when economic uncertainty touches so many homes across the United States, I find myself humbled by the steadfast faith and boundless compassion of our clergy and faithful. We are not a wealthy Church; we are not a people overflowing with excess. But we are a people with a heart - and it is this heart that we continue to share. For love is not measured by loud proclamations or eloquent speeches. Love is measured by action: a hand extended, a gentle touch, a bag of food placed quietly at someone’s door, a prayer whispered with tears. This is not charity for the sake of recognition - it is charity born of the Gospel.
When I witness our priests, volunteers, and parishioners gathering groceries in church basements, packing medicine after long workdays, or offering from their own modest tables to uplift someone suffering in Ukraine, I see the Church in its purest form. I see the hands of Christ. I see a love that does not ask, ‘How much will this cost?’ but asks instead, ‘Who needs us most right now?’
We may not be able to save the whole world at once, but we can transform one life, one family, one story at a time. And within that small transformation lies a great and holy work. This is how God acts - through those who are willing to love not in words alone, but in the very fabric of their lives. And as long as we continue to touch the wounds of others with tenderness and mercy, we bear witness that true light is never extinguished, even in the darkest night. For where there is love in action, there Christ Himself is present.”
Because of the faithful generosity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, families in Izium, Mykolaivka, and throughout Donetsk region have received:
- food when hunger threatened,
- blankets when winter approached,
- medicine when illness struck,
- heaters when the cold invaded,
- and most importantly - faith that tomorrow can still be beautiful.
The partnership between the UOC of the USA and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is a living witness that the family of Christ cannot be divided by borders, wars, or darkness.
Together, they walk roads most are afraid to enter. Together, they touch wounds most are afraid to see. Together, they lift souls that the world has forgotten.
May the Lord bless all who stand with Ukraine - and may He return a hundredfold to each heart that chooses light over darkness, compassion over indifference, love over fear.
Є в Україні міста, назви яких сьогодні звучать наче молитви.
Ізюм - колись перлина Донеччини, оточена сосновими лісами, освіжена подихом ріки, улюблена за тишу та красу - сьогодні стоїть як символ глибокого людського страждання. Те, що було мальовничим, тепер поранене. Те, що дихало життям, тепер у шрамах від обстрілів. Місто, яке жило природою, тепер задихається під тягарем руйнувань. Кожен вибух, кожне вибите вікно, кожна розтрощена стіна в Ізюмі шепоче ту саму трагічну істину: «Це - реальність України».
Та навіть у цій темряві відбувається щось надзвичайне.
Де є біль - там Церква йде першою Коли світ бачить лише руїни, Українська Православна Церква США бачить людей - їхні сльози, страх, втому, їхню віру. Коли ніч здригається від вибухів, а світанок відкриває картину руйнувань, Церква прокидається не до розпачу, а до місії. Бо Церква покликана бути саме там, де болить найбільше.
І тому вони їдуть: в Ізюм, у Миколаївку, у міста і села Донеччини - туди, де людське страждання залишає свої найглибші рани.
Через служіння Високопреосвященнішого Митрополита Сергія Донецького, благочинного Донеччини прот. Костянтина Кузнєцова, його дружини Наталії та сина Дмитра - УПЦ США приходить до людей не як гість, а як брат і сестра.
Церква приносить сумки з продуктами, ліками, засобами гігієни, ковдрами, обігрівачами - але найголовніше - приносить свою присутність, молитву і надію.
Вони зустрічають матерів із дітьми, які тікали серед ночі. Зустрічають стареньких, чиї домівки більше не існують. Зустрічають поранених тілом і серцем. І кожній людині Церква тихо промовляє через діла: «Ти не забутий. Ти не один. Ми поруч. З тобою Бог».
Гуманітарна команда, що служить у Донеччині, не приховує правди: втома реальна, вигорання реальне, емоційний тягар величезний. Це звичайні люди, які роблять незвичайні речі.
Та як каже о. Костянтин: «Господь має Свій план для нас. Він підіймає нас, зміцнює і знову посилає туди, де ми потрібні».
Це послух Христовій заповіді любові - готовність повертатися знову і знову у місця, де болить - перетворює людську доброту на святе служіння. І за цим служінням стоять архієреї УПЦ США.
Під архіпастирською опікою Високопреосвященнішого Митрополита Антонія та завдяки безпосередній, невтомній участі Високопреосвященнішого Архієпископа Даниїла гуманітарна діяльність Церкви стала життєвою опорою для тисяч людей.
Митрополит Антоній, з мудрістю духовного батька, невтомно нагадує: «Там, де людське життя під загрозою - Церква повинна бути присутня. Там, де падає сльоза - Церква повинна схилитися поруч. Там, де зростає страх - Церква повинна проголосити надію».
І дійсно, завдяки його проводу та щедрості вірних в Америці, незліченні життя були торкнуті милосердям.
З доріг, що проходять між зруйнованими містами, серед холоду та диму, о. Костянтин говорить слова, що відлунюють Євангелієм: «Ми знову там, де сотні очей повні сліз, де живуть історії втрат і болю. Ми тут - поруч із тими, хто чекає не лише хліба, але й теплого слова, молитви, підтримки».
Ці переселенці колись мали нормальне, спокійне життя: домівки, сади, роботу, мрії. Тепер вони несуть із собою лише пам’ять - і надію на інший завтрашній день. Але їхній дух залишається незламним.
«Вони бояться нас», - каже о. Костянтин. — «Бояться нашого духу, нашої стійкості, нашої мови. Бо нас неможливо стерти». Це і є чудо України.
Навіть перед лицем жорстокості, навіть під тінню війни, українська душа продовжує палати гідністю, мужністю і непохитною вірою. І Церква йде поряд із цією душею - крок за кроком.
У час, коли світло, тепло, вода і навіть лагідне слово стали розкішшю, кожен акт доброти сяє, як свічка. Кожен переданий пакет, кожна ліка, кожна молитва проголошує: Зло не переможе. Життя триває. Надія дихає. Бог серед Свого народу.
У моменти війни, страждань і невизначеності Українська Православна Церква США продовжує світити як жива ікона Христової любові - тихими актами милосердя, руками, що дають, і серцями, що не відвертаються.
Роздумуючи про віру та жертовність духовенства і вірних УПЦ США, Архієпископ Даниїл говорить: « У моменти, коли світ здається похитнутим, а економічна невизначеність торкається кожного дому в Америці, я знову і знову дивуюся вірі та любові нашого духовенства і вірних Української Православної Церкви США. Ми не багаті, ми не маємо надлишку, але ми маємо серце - і саме цим серцем ділимося. Бо любов не вимірюється гучними словами чи гучними заявами. Любов вимірюється дією: простягнутою рукою, теплим дотиком, шматком хліба у темну годину, молитвою, сказаною зі сльозами у голосі. Це не благодійність задля слави - це благодійність, народжена з Євангелія.
Коли я бачу наших священників, волонтерів, парафіян, які збирають продукти у підвалах храмів, пакують ліки після довгих робочих днів, відкладають останнє зі свого столу, щоб підтримати знедолених в Україні, я бачу Церкву в її найчистішій формі. Я бачу Христові руки. Я бачу любов, яка не питає: ‘Скільки це коштує?’ а питає: ‘Хто зараз найбільше потребує?’
Ми не рятуємо світ разом, але ми змінюємо одну людину, одну родину, одну історію за раз. І в цій маленькій зміні прихована велика переміна серця. Саме так діє Бог - через тих, хто готовий любити не словами, а життям. І поки ми продовжуємо торкатися ран інших з ніжністю та милосердям, ми свідчимо, що справжнє світло не гасне навіть у найгустішій темряві. Бо там, де є любов у дії, там присутній Сам Христос.”
Завдяки щедрості вірних УПЦ США сім’ї в Ізюмі, Миколаївці та в усій Донеччині отримали:
- їжу, коли загрожував голод,
- ковдри, коли наближалася зима,
- ліки, коли прийшла хвороба,
- обігрівачі, коли холод увірвався в оселі,
- і найважливіше - віру, що завтра може бути світлим.
Партнерство УПЦ США та Православної Церкви України - це живе свідчення того, що Христову родину неможливо розділити ані кордонами, ані війною, ані темрявою.
Вони йдуть дорогами, куди інші бояться ступити. Доторкаються ран, які інші бояться бачити. Підіймають душі, які світ забув.
Нехай Господь благословить усіх, хто стоїть поруч з Україною, і нехай Він поверне сторицею кожному серцю, що обирає світло замість темряви, співчуття замість байдужості, любов замість страху.
