In a world torn by uncertainty and war, there remains a quiet yet powerful truth that has sustained generations of faithful people: where a child suffers, the Church must stand first.
This truth echoed once again in recent days as His Eminence Metropolitan Serhii of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, through the heartfelt support of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, delivered St. Nicholas and Christmas gifts to orphans, children with disabilities, and the poorest families of the Donetsk region.
These were not simply parcels of sweets and simple toys - they were embraces of hope, carried across a land wounded by war, and placed into hands that too often tremble from fear, displacement, or illness.
Amidst the ruins of broken homes and shattered streets, the Church came as a living witness of the Gospel: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” (John 14:18)
For more than a quarter century, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has embraced the calling of Christ to care for Ukraine’s orphans. Through countless mission trips, humanitarian shipments, medical aid, and personal visits, the Church became a spiritual family for thousands of children - those abandoned, those disabled, those forgotten.
As His Grace Archbishop Daniel has often reminded the faithful: “For 25 years, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has carried the orphans of Ukraine in our arms and in our hearts. Even when we cannot stand physically beside them because of the war, our love continues to travel to them - through the hands of our hierarchs, clergy, volunteers, and every faithful soul who refuses to forget these little ones.”
This year, when war and danger prevented travel to Ukraine, the Church did not abandon its mission. Instead, our hands became the hands of Metropolitan Serhii, his clergy, monastics, medical workers, and volunteers who walk daily among the most vulnerable. These servants stood in front of children confined to wheelchairs, children who lost their homes, and children who lost their parents - and delivered not just gifts, but dignity.
When Metropolitan Serhii offered St. Nicholas gifts to children with disabilities, it was far more than a seasonal gesture. It was the proclamation of a Gospel truth: “Let the little children come to Me… for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 19:14)
The Christian duty to care for the orphan is not optional; it is the heartbeat of the Gospel.
Christ does not suggest compassion - He commands it: “I will not leave you as orphans.” (John 14:18) - “Whoever receives one little child in My name receives Me.” (Matthew 18:5)
The Holy Fathers also teach us with one voice:
- St. John Chrysostom:
“The poor are the treasures of the Church. For when you give to them, Christ Himself receives.” - St. Basil the Great:
“The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry child; the coat in your closet belongs to the one who shivers.” - St. Gregory the Theologian:
“Let us be fathers to the orphans and protectors to the widows. For in this we imitate God Himself.” - And St. Moses the Black said:
“When you see suffering, do not ask who is responsible - ask how you may be Christ to them.”
These are not simply ancient words - they are a command for today, a command our Church continues to fulfill.
The needs are enormous. The suffering is real. But so is our calling.
As Archbishop Daniel reminds us: “The war may limit our travel, but it cannot limit our love. Every gift, every prayer, every donation becomes a piece of the Gospel placed into the hands of a child.”
This sacred ministry continues only because of the open hearts of faithful believers, parishes, and partners across the United States. Through your generosity, the Church is able to provide:
- essential medical equipment for special-needs children,
- warm clothing and hygiene supplies for displaced families,
- food packages for the poorest villages of Donbas,
- spiritual comfort and pastoral care for those who feel forgotten,
- Christmas and St. Nicholas gifts that remind a child: “You matter. You are loved.”
Now, more than ever, as winter deepens and the war drags on, we must not allow even one child to feel abandoned or alone.
Let us answer Christ’s call with courage! Let us lift up those who cannot walk! Let us warm those who cannot heat their homes! Let us comfort those who have lost everything but hope.

May the Lord, through the prayers of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, bless every heart that gives, every hand that serves, and every child who waits with hope.

May Christ, the Giver of all compassion, bless our entire Ukrainian nation, our children, and every family who suffers. And may He strengthen all who choose love over indifference.
Де Любов Стає Вчинком: УПЦ США Поруч із Сиротами, Дітьми з Інвалідністю та Малозабезпеченими
У світі, роздертому невизначеністю та війною, залишається одна тиха, але потужна істина, що підтримувала покоління вірних: там, де страждає дитина, Церква повинна стояти першою.
Ця істина знову засяяла в останні дні, коли Високопреосвященніший митрополит Сергій (Православної Церкви України), за щирої підтримки Української Православної Церкви США, доставив святомиколаївські та різдвяні подарунки сиротам, дітям з інвалідністю та найбіднішим родинам околиці Дніпра.
Це були не просто пакунки зі солодощами та простими іграшками - це були обійми надії, перенесені через землю, зранену війною, і покладені в руки, які надто часто тремтять від страху, переселення чи хвороби.
Серед руїн знищених домівок і понівечених вулиць, Церква прийшла як живе свідчення Євангелія: «Не залишу вас сиротами; прийду до вас» (Ів. 14:18).
Вже понад чверть століття Українська Православна Церква США несе Христове покликання піклуватися про сиріт України. Через численні місійні поїздки, гуманітарні відправлення, медичну допомогу та особисті візити, Церква стала духовною родиною для тисяч дітей - покинутих, дітей з інвалідністю, забутих суспільством.
Як часто нагадує вірним Високопреосвященніший архієпископ Даниїл: «Ось уже 25 років, з благословення Митрополита Антонія, Українська Православна Церква США носить сиріт України на руках і в серцях. Навіть коли ми не можемо фізично бути поруч через війну, наша любов продовжує мандрувати до них - через руки наших ієрархів, духовенства, волонтерів та кожної віруючої душі, яка відмовляється забути наймолодших серед нас».
Цього року, коли війна і небезпека зробили неможливими поїздки до України, Церква не залишила свого служіння. Нашими руками стали руки митрополита Сергія, його духовенства, чернецтва, медичних працівників та волонтерів, які щодня йдуть до найбільш вразливих. Вони стояли перед дітьми в інвалідних візках, перед дітьми, які втратили свої домівки, перед дітьми, які втратили батьків - і принесли не лише подарунки, але гідність.
Коли митрополит Сергій вручав святомиколаївські дари дітям з інвалідністю, це було набагато більше, ніж сезонний жест. Це було проголошення євангельської істини: «Пустіть дітей і не бороніть їм приходити до Мене… бо таких є Царство Небесне» (Мт. 19:14).
Християнський обов’язок піклуватися про сироту - не опція; це серцебиття Євангелія.
Христос не пропонує співчуття - Він наказує його: «Не залишу вас сиротами» (Ів. 14:18). «Хто прийме одну таку дитину в Моє Ім’я — Мене приймає» (Мт. 18:5).
Так само й Святі Отці говорять одним голосом:
- Св. Іоан Золотоустий:
«Бідні - це скарб Церкви. Бо коли ти даєш їм, Сам Христос приймає». - Св. Василій Великий:
«Хліб, що у твоїй коморі, належить голодній дитині; одяг, що у твоїй шафі, належить тому, хто тремтить від холоду». - Св. Григорій Богослов:
«Будьмо батьками для сиріт і захисниками для вдів. Бо в цьому ми наслідуємо Самого Бога». - Прп. Мойсей Мурин:
«Коли бачиш страждання, не питай, хто винен - питай, як ти можеш бути Христом для цієї людини».
Це - не просто давні слова. Це - наказ на сьогодні, і наша Церква продовжує вірно його виконувати.
Потреби величезні. Страждання реальне. Але реальним є й наше покликання.
Як нагадує архієпископ Даниїл: «Війна може обмежити наші подорожі, але вона не здатна обмежити нашу любов. Кожен подарунок, кожна молитва, кожна пожертва стають частинкою Євангелія, вкладеною в руки дитини».
Це святе служіння триває лише завдяки відкритим серцям вірних, парафій та партнерів по всій Америці. Завдяки вашій щедрості Церква може забезпечити:
- життєво необхідне медичне обладнання для дітей з особливими потребами,
• теплий одяг і засоби гігієни для переселених родин,
• харчові пакети для найбідніших сіл Донбасу,
• духовну розраду та пастирську опіку для тих, хто почувається забутим,
• різдвяні та святомиколаївські подарунки, що нагадують дитині: «Ти важливий. Тебе люблять.»
Сьогодні, як ніколи, коли зима поглиблюється, а війна триває, ми не можемо дозволити навіть одній дитині відчути себе покинутою.
Відповімо ж на Христовий поклик з відвагою! Підтримаємо тих, хто не може ходити! Зігріймо тих, хто не може обігріти свій дім! Утішімо тих, хто втратив усе, окрім надії!
Ще є час пожертвувати! Ще є час допомогти. Ще є час стати причиною дитячої усмішки цього Різдва.
Нехай Господь, молитвами святителя Миколая Чудотворця, благословить кожне серце, що дає, кожну руку, що служить, і кожну дитину, яка чекає з надією.
«Haскільки ви зробили це одному з найменших братів Моїх, ви зробили це Мені» (Мт. 25:40).
Нехай Христос, Джерело всякого милосердя, благословить увесь наш український народ, наших дітей і кожну родину, що страждає. І нехай Він зміцнить усіх, хто обирає любов замість байдужості.
