Warmth in the Midst of Winter: The Living Charity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA

Winter in Ukraine has become more than a season - it is a crucible. As the ongoing Russian invasion grinds on, the cold descends upon cities and villages already scarred by destruction. For many families, electricity is available for only an hour a day - sometimes less - just enough time to warm a room briefly, charge a phone, or boil water before darkness returns. In this prolonged night, the Church has chosen not to remain distant.

Across the ocean, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has opened her heart in a profoundly Eucharistic way - receiving Christ in prayer and offering Him back to the world through concrete acts of mercy. This charitable ministry, carried out with blessing and careful coordination, has become a lifeline for people enduring brutal cold, hunger, and uncertainty.

At the heart of this work on the ground in Ukraine is the ministry of Very Rev. Fr. Konstantyn Kuznetsov, together with his wife Natalia and their son Dmytro. Serving within the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and under the spiritual leadership of Metropolitan Serhii of Donetsk, their family embodies a quiet heroism. They travel to places where heating has failed, where power is absent for twenty-two or twenty-three hours each day, and where people wait not only for supplies - but for reassurance that they have not been abandoned.

“When the lights go out,” Fr. Konstantyn reflects, “fear comes quickly. But when people see the Church arrive - with food, warm clothing, candles, and prayer - they remember that Christ has not left them. Even one hour of warmth becomes a sign of hope.”

This ministry unfolds with the blessing of Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and under the pastoral oversight of Archbishop Daniel, who has been tirelessly coordinating humanitarian relief throughout this severe winter. What emerges is not merely an aid operation, but a living confession of Orthodox faith - As we Worship, So we Believe, So we Live.

Archbishop Daniel speaks of this work not in terms of logistics alone, but theology lived: “Charity is not an accessory to the Church - it is her breath. When we clothe the cold, feed the hungry, and stand beside those in darkness, we proclaim Christ crucified and risen more eloquently than any sermon.”

The supplies delivered - food, generators, thermal clothing, medical necessities - are essential. Yet just as essential is the presence of the Church herself. In bombed neighborhoods and frozen villages, people gather around priests not only to receive aid, but to hear Scripture, to pray, to light a candle, and to remember that life is stronger than death.

In these moments, the Church reveals her true warmth. Not warmth that depends on electricity or fuel, but the warmth of love that flows from the Cross and Resurrection. The Gospel is not suspended during war or winter; it becomes sharper, clearer, and more demanding.

“When a mother thanks us with tears,” Fr. Konstantyn says, “we understand that what we bring is more than food. It is dignity. It is the assurance that God sees them.”

As this harsh winter continues, so does the call. The faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA - parishes, families, children, and elders - are invited to remain participants in this sacred work. Every donation, every prayer, every sacrifice becomes part of a chain of mercy stretching across continents.

To give is to bear witness. To support is to confess faith. To act is to become warmth in the midst of winter.

We prayerfully invite you to continue supporting the humanitarian ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. Your generosity directly sustains life, restores hope, and proclaims Christ where darkness seeks to prevail.
