As the war in Ukraine continues to wound the lives of millions of innocent people, the humanitarian ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA remains a living testimony to the words of Christ: “I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in…” (Matthew 25:35).

Throughout this week, clergy and volunteers serving in cooperation with the humanitarian ministry supported by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA traveled throughout the Dnipropetrovsk and Kyiv regions of Ukraine, bringing desperately needed aid, comfort, and spiritual encouragement to some of the most vulnerable members of society - the elderly, the sick, displaced families, orphaned children, and those whose lives have been shattered by war.

One of the first stops of the mission was a local hospice in Bykivnia, where patients with severe cognitive and physical disabilities receive care. Among them were bedridden elderly people, patients recovering from devastating strokes, and individuals suffering from dementia.

The volunteers arrived not simply with supplies, but with compassion and dignity for those who are so often forgotten by society. Large quantities of diapers, warm blankets, yogurts, hygiene products, and food were delivered in order to ease the burden of daily life for both patients and caregivers.

In the quiet halls of the hospice, where suffering is deeply visible in the eyes of the residents, the smallest gesture became a sign of love and remembrance.

“Every package of diapers, every blanket, every warm meal is not merely humanitarian assistance,” reflected Very Rev. Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov, who continues to coordinate humanitarian outreach in war-torn regions of Ukraine. “It is a reminder to these suffering people that they have not been abandoned. The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has stood with us from the very beginning of this tragedy - providing humanitarian support, financial assistance, logistical aid, medicine, food, and the means necessary for us to continue serving Christ in those who suffer. We are profoundly grateful for this living witness of Christian love.”

The humanitarian mission also reached displaced families throughout the Dnipropetrovsk region - people who were forced to flee their homes because of relentless shelling, occupation, and destruction. Many lost everything: homes, employment, family members, and any sense of stability.

Volunteers distributed food packages, hygiene products, and basic necessities while offering words of encouragement and prayer.

Sometimes people do not need lengthy speeches,” Fr. Kostyantyn reflected. “They simply need someone to stand beside them and say: ‘You are not alone.’ Through the faithful support of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, we are able to continue carrying that message into places overwhelmed by grief and despair.”

Among the most emotionally difficult visits was the journey to the Center for Social and Psychological Rehabilitation of Children in Kyiv. The center shelters children removed from their homes because of abuse, neglect, addiction, and other tragic family circumstances.

There, volunteers encountered children whose young faces already carried the burden of pain and instability far beyond their years. Yet despite everything they had endured, the children welcomed the visitors with smiles, laughter, and quiet hope.

The mission brought new clothing, shoes, sweets, juices, cookies, toys, and gifts for every child. Not a single child left without receiving a toy - a small but powerful reminder that they are seen, valued, and loved.

“War destroys buildings,” said His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, “but sin, neglect, addiction, and violence destroy the human soul and wound the innocence of children. As a Church, we cannot remain indifferent when children suffer. Every child deserves to know love, stability, dignity, and the presence of Christ through the care of His people.”

The mission also visited the only functioning orphanage currently operating in the Kyiv region, located in the village of Vorzel - a place forever marked by the horrors of the Russian occupation in 2022.

Today, approximately one hundred children - from newborn infants to eight years old - reside there under the loving care of dedicated staff and the compassionate leadership of director Mrs. Tetiana.

The orphanage itself bears silent scars of war. The nearby communities of Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel, and Borodianka became names forever etched into the painful memory of humanity because of the atrocities committed during the invasion. Yet within the walls of this orphanage, one also encounters something stronger than fear: the quiet resilience of love.

The children’s rooms are decorated with warmth and tenderness - butterfly themes, ocean themes, colorful drawings, toys, books, and educational games filling spaces that strive to restore a sense of childhood stolen by violence.

Volunteers delivered diapers, clothing, shoes, fruit, juices, sweets, hair accessories for the girls, and many other necessities. More importantly, they delivered human presence, compassion, and prayer.

Archbishop Daniel reflected on the importance of the Church’s humanitarian mission:

“In every suffering child, we encounter Christ Himself. In every displaced mother, every wounded soldier, every forgotten elderly person, we stand before the Cross of our Lord. The humanitarian ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA is not simply about delivering boxes of aid - it is about carrying the love of God into the darkest places of human pain. Even amid destruction and war, the light of Christ continues to shine through acts of mercy, compassion, and sacrifice.”

His Eminence further expressed profound gratitude to the faithful, clergy, parish communities, organizations, and benefactors of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA whose sacrificial generosity makes this ministry possible.

“Every donation matters,” Archbishop Daniel stated. “Every dollar becomes food for the hungry, medicine for the sick, warmth for a child, dignity for the elderly, and hope for those who are losing strength under the burden of war. We may not all stand physically on the front lines, but every act of mercy becomes a spiritual defense of life against darkness.”

As Ukraine continues to endure unimaginable suffering, the humanitarian ministry of the Church remains an essential lifeline for countless people struggling simply to survive another day.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA prayerfully appeals to all people of goodwill: do not allow compassion to grow cold. Continue to support the humanitarian ministry of the Church so that aid, hope, and the love of Christ may continue reaching the wounded people of Ukraine.

In these difficult times, every prayer, every donation, and every act of kindness becomes a testimony that humanity, compassion, and faith are still stronger than hatred and destruction.

Віра, що годує, одягає та втішає: гуманітарне служіння в Україні 

У той час, коли війна в Україні продовжує ранити життя мільйонів невинних людей, гуманітарне служіння Української Православної Церкви США залишається живим свідченням слів Христа: «Бо Я голодував, і ви дали Мені їсти; прагнув, і ви напоїли Мене; був подорожнім, і ви прийняли Мене…» (Мт. 25:35).

Протягом цього тижня духовенство та волонтери, які співпрацюють із гуманітарною місією, підтримуваною Українською Православною Церквою США, подорожували Дніпропетровською та Київською областями України, доставляючи вкрай необхідну допомогу, розраду та духовну підтримку найбільш вразливим членам суспільства - людям похилого віку, хворим, переселенцям, дітям-сиротам та всім тим, чиє життя було зруйноване війною.

Однією з перших зупинок місії став місцевий хоспіс у Биківні, де перебувають пацієнти з важкими когнітивними та фізичними порушеннями. Серед них - лежачі хворі похилого віку, люди після тяжких інсультів та пацієнти, які страждають від деменції.

Волонтери прибули не лише з матеріальною допомогою, але й із співчуттям та гідністю для тих, кого суспільство часто забуває. Було доставлено велику кількість підгузків, теплих ковдр, йогуртів, засобів гігієни та продуктів харчування, аби хоч трохи полегшити щоденні труднощі пацієнтів і працівників закладу.

У тихих коридорах хоспісу, де страждання глибоко відображається в очах мешканців, навіть найменший жест ставав знаком любові та пам’яті.

«Кожна упаковка підгузків, кожна ковдра, кожна тепла страва - це не просто гуманітарна допомога, - зазначив всечесніший протоієрей Костянтин Кузнєцов, який продовжує координувати гуманітарне служіння у зруйнованих війною регіонах України. - Це нагадування цим стражденним людям, що вони не покинуті. Українська Православна Церква США стоїть поруч із нами від самого початку цієї трагедії - надаючи гуманітарну підтримку, фінансову допомогу, логістичне забезпечення, ліки, продукти харчування та все необхідне для того, щоб ми могли й надалі служити Христові в тих, хто страждає. Ми глибоко вдячні за це живе свідчення християнської любові».

Гуманітарна місія також охопила родини переселенців у Дніпропетровській області - людей, які були змушені залишити свої домівки через безперервні обстріли, окупацію та руйнування. Багато хто втратив усе: житло, роботу, рідних та будь-яке відчуття стабільності.

Волонтери роздавали продуктові набори, засоби гігієни та речі першої необхідності, одночасно даруючи людям слова підтримки та молитви.

«Іноді людям не потрібні довгі промови, - поділився отець Костянтин. - Їм просто потрібен хтось, хто стане поруч і скаже: “Ви не самі”. Завдяки вірній підтримці Української Православної Церкви США ми можемо продовжувати нести це послання у місця, переповнені болем і відчаєм».

Одним із найемоційніших моментів місії стало відвідання Центру соціально-психологічної реабілітації дітей у Києві. У цьому закладі перебувають діти, вилучені з родин через насильство, недбалість, залежності та інші трагічні життєві обставини.

Там волонтери зустріли дітей, чиї юні обличчя вже несуть тягар болю та нестабільності, значно більший за їхній вік. І все ж, попри пережите, діти зустрічали гостей усмішками, сміхом і тихою надією.

Місія привезла новий одяг, взуття, солодощі, соки, печиво, іграшки та подарунки для кожної дитини. Жодна дитина не залишилася без іграшки - маленького, але надзвичайно важливого знаку того, що вони є побаченими, цінними та любленими.

«Війна руйнує будівлі, - зазначив Високопреосвященніший Архієпископ Даниїл Української Православної Церкви США, - але гріх, байдужість, залежність і насильство руйнують людську душу та ранять невинність дітей. Як Церква, ми не можемо залишатися байдужими, коли страждають діти. Кожна дитина заслуговує знати любов, стабільність, гідність та присутність Христа через турботу Його народу».

Місія також відвідала єдиний діючий дитячий будинок у Київській області, розташований у селищі Ворзель - місці, назавжди позначеному жахами російської окупації 2022 року.

Сьогодні тут проживає близько ста дітей - від новонароджених немовлят до восьмирічних дітей - під люблячою опікою персоналу та мудрим керівництвом директорки пані Тетяни.

Сам дитячий будинок несе мовчазні рани війни. Сусідні міста та селища - Буча, Ірпінь, Гостомель, Бородянка - назавжди закарбувалися в болючій пам’яті людства через звірства, вчинені під час вторгнення. Але в стінах цього дитячого закладу відчувається щось сильніше за страх - тиха сила любові.

Дитячі кімнати оформлені з теплом і ніжністю - морська тематика, метелики, яскраві малюнки, іграшки, книжки та розвиваючі ігри наповнюють простір, який намагається повернути дітям відчуття дитинства, вкраденого війною.

Волонтери доставили підгузки, одяг, взуття, фрукти, соки, солодощі, прикраси для волосся для дівчаток та багато інших необхідних речей. Але найголовніше - вони привезли людську присутність, співчуття та молитву.

Архієпископ Даниїл, розмірковуючи про значення гуманітарного служіння Церкви, зазначив:

«У кожній стражденній дитині ми зустрічаємо Самого Христа. У кожній переселеній матері, кожному пораненому воїні, кожній забутій літній людині ми стоїмо перед Хрестом Господнім. Гуманітарне служіння Української Православної Церкви США - це не просто доставка коробок із допомогою. Це принесення любові Божої у найтемніші місця людського болю. Навіть серед руйнувань і війни світло Христове продовжує сяяти через діла милосердя, співчуття та жертовності».

Його Високопреосвященство також висловив глибоку вдячність вірним, духовенству, парафіям, організаціям та доброчинцям Української Православної Церкви США, чия жертовна щедрість робить це служіння можливим.

«Кожна пожертва має значення, - наголосив Архієпископ Даниїл. - Кожен долар стає їжею для голодних, ліками для хворих, теплом для дитини, гідністю для літньої людини та надією для тих, хто втрачає сили під тягарем війни. Ми не всі можемо фізично стояти на передовій, але кожен акт милосердя стає духовним захистом життя від темряви».

Поки Україна продовжує переживати невимовні страждання, гуманітарне служіння Церкви залишається життєво важливою підтримкою для незліченної кількості людей, які щодня борються за виживання.

Українська Православна Церква США молитовно звертається до всіх людей доброї волі: не дозволяйте вашому співчуттю охолонути. Продовжуйте підтримувати гуманітарне служіння Церкви, щоб допомога, надія та любов Христова й надалі досягали пораненого народу України.

У ці складні часи кожна молитва, кожна пожертва та кожен акт доброти стають свідченням того, що людяність, співчуття та віра все ще сильніші за ненависть і руйнування.
