As Ukraine continues to grapple with the devastating impacts of war, the humanitarian aid provided by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (UOC of the USA) remains a beacon of hope. One particularly example of this support took place on September 1-2, 2024, coinciding with Knowledge Day, a significant event in Ukraine marking the return of young people to academic institutions. This year, many children from displaced families in the Donetsk region were able to start the school year with joy, thanks to the dedicated efforts of the UOC of the USA.
In a collaborative initiative spearheaded by Archbishop Daniel and Very Rev. Fr. Konstantyn Kuznetsov, Dean of Donbas Deanery of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the UOC of the USA provided essential school supplies to children of displaced individuals. Fr. Kuznetsov personally delivered a substantial amount of stationery and children's backpacks to those displaced by conflict from various parts of the Donetsk region. Families from cities such as Avdiyivka, Bakhmut, Kostyantynivka, Chasiv Yar, Soledar, Toretsk, and New York have been forced to flee from war and explosions, seeking refuge in safer areas. Many have resettled in communities like Petropavlivka, Bohynivka, Bohdano-Verbky in the Brahyniv community, and Pershotravensk, starting their lives anew without basic necessities.
The UOC of the USA’s assistance has significantly alleviated the challenges faced by these displaced families. The delivery of school supplies has not only provided practical help but also brought emotional relief to the children and their parents, who were visibly happy and grateful. In many cases, this support has been life-changing, as the rising cost of living in wartime Ukraine has made it difficult for families to afford even the most basic items. Now, as the new school year begins, these children can attend their classes with a sense of normalcy, their backpacks filled, and their spirits lifted.
This humanitarian effort was made possible by the generosity of the UOC of the USA, as well as through a significant partnership with St. Joseph Roman Catholic Parish of Hillsborough, NJ, and its pastor, Rev. Fr. Hank Hilton – who donated funds for these unique ministerial opportunities. Their contributions have been instrumental in ensuring that children from displaced families are not left behind in their education during these challenging times.
To mark this special occasion and invoke divine protection and guidance, a prayer service was held, and each child received a blessing for the school year. This spiritual support, coupled with material assistance, reflects the holistic approach of the UOC of the USA in ministering to both the physical and spiritual needs of the people affected by the ongoing conflict.
The need remains great! Thousands of children and their families across Ukraine continue to face uncertainty and hardship due to the ongoing war. As we reflect on the success of this recent initiative, we recognize that much more is needed to sustain these efforts. We call upon our brothers and sisters in faith, our friends, and all those who are moved by the plight of the Ukrainian people to continue supporting these vital humanitarian endeavors.
Your donations and support make a real difference, offering not only material aid but also hope and comfort to those in need. Please consider contributing to the ongoing humanitarian efforts of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. Together, we can ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, even in the face of adversity. Let us remember the words of Christ, “Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me” (Matthew 25:40).
